Both oestrogen and progesterone play an important role in keeping your mood balanced. So when you hit perimenopause and your hormone levels begin to fluctuate you can find your mood fluctuating too. Up one minute, and then down the next in an ongoing yoyo effect.

Even when you reach menopause itself you can still experience low mood. Because oestrogen stimulates serotonin, a mood boosting hormone, the low levels of oestrogen during your menopause years can leave you feeling down.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE LOW MOOD?

Low mood can present itself in a variety of ways. It’s not just feeling a bit fed up, there’s more to it than that. Low mood can take the enjoyment out of your life and rob you of your ‘get up and go’.

SYMPTOMS OF LOW MOOD INCLUDE:

  • Constant Feeling Of Worry
  • Feeling Sad/Down
  • Feeling Anxious
  • Prone To Feeling Panicky
  • Low Self-esteem
  • Constantly Feeling Tired/Lethargic
  • Feeling Frustrated/Angry

You might not be able to find any logical reason for how you are feeling but, nonetheless, these feelings are real and can spoil your quality of life.

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO TO LIFT YOUR LOW MOOD?

Eating a healthy and varied diet alongside getting regular exercise will help to lift your low mood and help to restore your energy levels. Relaxation and a good night’s sleep also help. Talking it through with friends or close family/partners can be of great help too.

BUT WE ALL NEED A LITTLE EXTRA HELP SOMETIMES

There are a lot of natural remedies and supplements that can help to lift your low mood. In fact there are so many it can be difficult to know where to start. I’ve put together my top 4 product recommendations that can be a great help in lifting your mood.

MY TOP 4 PRODUCTS TO LIFT LOW MOOD

  • 1  MOOD ESSENCE (Bach Flower Remedies/Jan De Vries/A.Vogel)

This generally comes in a tincture dropper form. You add a few drops, as per the instructions, to a little water to make a drink. It’s usually taken 3 times a day but check the dosage instructions for dilution and frequency for the one you have bought. Mood essence gives you an uplifting and cheering effect. It can also make you feel more positive which leads to feelings of renewed energy levels. This is my personal favourite and works well in lifting my mood whenever I’m feeling low. It also comes in a handy size dropper bottle. I pop it into my bag and take with me, so it’s easy to take my daily dose wherever I am.

This is an age old remedy for low mood and mild depression. It usually comes in tablet form but it can also be bought as a tea. I’ve used it in the past to help to lift my winter blues and it’s an effective mood lifting remedy. You usually notice the difference in how you feel within a few days. It can also help you to sleep better and feel more relaxed in general. It’s a popular traditional remedy and the only downside is that it can interact with a lot of other natural/herbal supplements and prescribed medicines. If you don’t take any other medication then it shouldn’t be a problem, but if you do, you need to check if St John’s Wort will be ok to take too.

Ginseng has been used as a herbal medicine in Asia and North America for centuries. It has a wide range of health benefits one of which is lifting low mood. In fact, it’s often used as a treatment for mild depression. It generally comes in tablet/capsule form but can sometimes be bought as a liquid extract dropper.

This is usually sold in tablet form. The tablets contain a combination of St John’s Wort and Black Cohosh, with the St John’s Wort being the largest ingredient. This is a bit of an all rounder for common menopause symptoms. It helps to ease hot flushes, night sweats, mild anxiety and also has a mood boosting effect.

So my top tip for lifting low mood is MOOD ESSENCE (Bach Flower Remedies/Jan De Vries/A.Vogel). It works well for me, but remember we are all different. Give it a go or try one of my other recommendations. Don’t worry if you have to try a few different things to find what works best for you. After all, we’re all different and easing the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause can often be trial and error.

N.B If your low mood continues for more than two weeks see your doctor as you may be suffering from depression. Depression is not just a prolonged period of low mood, it’s a medical condition that needs professional medical advice and treatment. Don’t suffer in silence.
